Late 2021 (for early 2022 introduction) brought a new 201-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder with 11% more horsepower and 25% more torque than the engine it replaced. Though the redesigned third-gen Rogue began life with a version of the old, naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder, it lasted only a year. The new Rogue is so much better looking than the previous version, one might struggle to remember earlier versions. After years of blandness, Nissan has hit its stride with design. Both have a 106.5-inch wheelbase, but the Outlander fits a tiny third-row, whereas the Rogue is a two-row-only proposition and better for it. It’s a not-very-well-kept secret that the new Rogue was developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, and it shares a platform with the Mitsubishi Outlander. The list includes the Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, Chevrolet Equinox and Kia Sportage. In addition to the aforementioned heavy hitters, nearly every maker fields an entry. Given the popularity of the compact crossover segment, there is no shortage of fierce competitors. Adding AWD to any trim costs just $1,500, a steal for folks who live in wintry climes. Considering how much more the SV brings (adaptive cruise control, for starters) for just a $1,690 increase in price, it makes little sense to fuss with optioning an S into a better-equipped vehicle. The S ($28,655, including a $1,295 destination fee) leads off with a low price but not much little else. The 2023 Rogue is available in four trims, each in front- or all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. While it has one less cylinder than older Rogues, the current one is faster, more efficient and more fun. The 2021 redesign marked a sea change, cosmetically and structurally, and late that year a new turbocharged three-cylinder engine completed the makeover. Although the Rogue has been the brand’s top seller since 2016 (over 412,000 units in 2018 alone), the previous-generation model lacked the cohesiveness that defined the segment leaders. Now in the third model year of its third generation, the 2023 Nissan Rogue faces off against competitors including the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson in the hyper-competitive compact crossover SUV segment.
